<image:title>Mood Drawings</image:title>
<image:caption>Week I (April 13-19 2020), ink on 7 sheets of chromatography paper soaked in Vodka, Marijuana, Tylenol, Gin, Advil, Mezcal, and Amoxicillin solutions, 5 x 31.5 inches BEN WEINER: MOOD DRAWINGS AT MARK MOORE FINE ART, LOS ANGELES, CA Mark Moore Fine Art is pleased to present Ben Weiner: Mood Drawings, an exhibition focused on the artist’s ongoing series of “Diary” drawings. In these alchemical works, Weiner soaks ink-coated chromatography paper in solutions of drugs, resulting in hazy, prismatic abstractions. Inspired by the “drug diaries” patients keep during clinical trials, Weiner made the drawings using substances left from his own daily consumption, so that they constitute a record of his mental states over time. The drugs range from the psychedelic, to the addictive, to the mundane, including Marijuana, Paxlovid, MDMA, Vicodin, Kombucha, Advil, Caffeine, and Mezcal. By couching painterly expressionism within an honest record of his substance usage, Weiner self-critically engages with issues surrounding wellness and mental health. To make the drawings, Weiner begins by coating the chromatography paper in ink, alternately using a monochrome or multi-colored palette based on his mood. He applies the ink manually, scribbling gestures onto the paper with markers. He then crushes a chosen drug and mixes it with water to create a solution. He soaks the chromatography paper (which is used in labs to identify drugs) in the drug solution, alternately re-soaking it or removing it to dry when he sees a result that moves him. Each drug releases a unique spectrum of colors from the ink, enhancing the marks Weiner has made on the paper. By harnessing these effects, Weiner has developed a signature language of hazy fields permeated by blips and striations, all resulting from his methods of dipping and soaking the paper in his custom tinctures. Weiner titles each of his drawings with the date on which he consumed the substance it contains. Invoking On Kawara’s date paintings, this archival approach connects art-making with the memory of lived experience. In these drawings, which are Weiner’s largest to date, he has expanded this theme with his first-ever multi-panel works: “Weekend 1 (April 8/9 2023)” is a diptych made with Mezcal and Marijuana, consumed respectively on a Saturday and Sunday. “Week 1 (April 13-19 2020) ” is a 7-part polyptych soaked in 7 drugs used during a highly-medicated week of the 2020 lockdown. These drawings, along with works like “December 26 2022,”-- soaked in Paxlovid left from a bout with COVID– evoke the range of experiences we associate with drug usage, from weekend benders, to self-medication, to isolation and recovery. While Colorfield painters like Rothko and Frankenthaler are clear precedents for Weiner’s drawings, his choice of drugs as his medium could be seen to deconstruct the very notion of pure expression. The fact that Weiner’s abstractions are “enhanced” evokes a cultural obsession with chemical consumption that permeates virtually every aspect of daily life- from performance-enhancing drugs in sports, to the 90% of Americans that regularly consume caffeine for productivity, to marijuana’s increasing legalization, to the around 10 million people who misuse Codeine annually. Weiner has cited that an inspiration for this series came from his grandfather’s Codeine addiction, which was enabled by physicians attempting to manage his chronic pain. Thus, while Weiner’s cheeky use of drugs might initially seem to problematize pure expression, it ultimately holds a mirror up to the ubiquity of drugs within the human experience. If anything, Weiner’s use of synthetic chemicals to create organic, meditative, even beautiful images, promotes the possibility of a mindful relationship between ourselves and the substances we can’t help but encounter in daily life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Installation View BEN WEINER: DIARY AT HUNTED PROJECTS, EDINBURG, SCOTLAND, SEPTEMBER 15 - OCTOBER 27, 2023 Hunted Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new drawings by Ben Weiner (b.1980). Diary is Weiner’s first solo presentation with Hunted Projects. By using products from my daily routines— such as medications and cosmetics— as my media, I map out a picture of myself as the sum of my habits. My paintings and drawings address contemporary culture’s obsession with bodily enhancement through chemical products, whether by consuming energy drinks or taking illegal drugs. In my current series of “Diary” drawings, I soak ink-coated chromatography paper in solutions of drugs, creating colorful psychedelic washes based on the substance’s chemical composition. I use substances left from my own daily consumption, so that the drawings constitute a diary of my mental states (inspired by the “drug diaries” doctors encourage patients to keep during clinical trials). My drugs range from the psychedelic, to the addictive, to the mundane, including Marijuana, Paxlovid, MDMA, Codeine, Oxycontin, Kombucha, Advil, and Vodka. Each of these drugs releases a unique spectrum of colors from the ink, enhancing the marks I made on the paper. I consider this process to be a material embodiment of altered perception. By harnessing it, I have developed a signature language of hazy fields permeated by blips and striations, all resulting from my dipping and soaking the paper in my customized tinctures. My approach expands Clement Greenberg’s concept that an artwork tells the story of its own making to include not only my art-making process, but also my chemical consumption and state of mind. The series addresses the shifting cultural/legal status of drugs, and post-Covid anxieties surrounding mortality and mental health, issues that I understand well coming from a family of medical professionals. In my titles, I use a mixture of Spanish and English, reflecting the influence of my mixed ethnic background upon my practice of material translation, all of which informs my creation of works that assert formalism’s relation to the personal. BENJAMIN HERNDON & BEN WEINER, CURATED BY PING ZHENG, KRISTEN LORELLO GALLERY, NEW YORK, NY, SEPTEMBER 3 - OCTOBER 5, 2024 This exhibition features the works of two artists who explore art through distinctive materials, reflecting on how our lives are shaped by the uncertainties of a fast-paced world. In a parallel exploration, the artworks evoke a sense of meditation and contemplation. The Void of Space transcends traditional boundaries, featuring a convergence of mediums between drug-infused ink drawings to handmade graphite and color-shifting paints. Each artist brings a unique interpretation to the realms of physical and spiritual space. The exhibition captures beautifully that tranquil and expansive atmosphere, it invites visitors to ponder the subtleties of silence, time, darkness, colour, light, and the limitless potential contained within the void. As viewers traverse the gallery, they will encounter thought-provoking pieces that challenge perceptions, evoke emotions, and spark curiosity about the boundaries between observer and the observed, blurring into a shared voyage through the exhibition. -Ping Zheng</image:caption>

<image:caption>April (My Face), ink on chromatography paper soaked in Tylenol and Mezcal solution, 40 x 32 inches BEN WEINER: DAD BOD, PRESENTED BY MARK MOORE FINE ART AND ARTSY, MARCH 12TH - MAY 3RD, 2026 Mark Moore Fine Art is very pleased to present "Ben Weiner: Dad Bod,” an exhibition of the artist’s recent “Diary” drawings. Weiner creates these works by soaking ink-coated paper in solutions of drugs, producing colorful, psychedelic washes. The ongoing series emerged from contemporary culture's obsession with bodily enhancement through chemical products. In "Dad Bod", however, the fifteen new drawings turn toward a more personal register. Harnessing abstraction's capacity to evoke the body in its absence, in these meditative works Weiner embeds lived experience and vulnerability within mark-making, process, and material. Weiner begins each of his “Diary” drawings by applying gestural ink marks to a sheet of chromatography paper with markers. He then soaks the ink-coated paper in solutions of crushed drugs mixed with water, which chemically breaks down the inks into hazy, prismatic spectrums of color. Through chromatography, a process used in forensic laboratories, each substance releases a distinct range of colors from the ink, enhancing the abstract gestures inscribed on the paper. Weiner typically makes his drawings using substances left from his own consumption, including marijuana, Paxlovid, Doxycycline, Penicillin, Vicodin, MDMA, Mezcal, Tylenol, and caffeine, so that the drawings constitute a chemical diary of his shifting mental and physical states. In these recent works, he also incorporates prescriptions belonging to those close to him. As suggested by the title, Dad Bod, this performative use of drugs-as-medium operates as a meditation on mortality and the passage of time. In April (My Face), a spectrum of colors flows across the paper, released by Mezcal ingested on a spring day and Tylenol taken to ease the hangover. Palliative medications, such as codeine used in Groundhog Day, underscore the repetitive nature of care in the aging process. Weiner has referenced using his grandfather's late-life medications to make this drawing and several others. The original ink gestures in Groundhog Day have a rhythm recalling Jackson Pollock's movements in his painting Blue Poles. Lines of color radiate from these gestures as a result of repeatedly dipping the paper into the Codeine solution. Through these procedures of marking, soaking, and dipping, Weiner has developed a signature language of hazy fields permeated by blips and striations. The works in Dad Bod introduce a relief element to this lexicon, formed when pills from his solutions adhere to the paper during soaking. Both sculptural and graphic, these pill remnants punctuate the rhythm of his gestures and color fields. In Winter Sounds, Furosemide pills are dispersed across the surface like rain droplets on a pond, while the striations left by dipping suggest ripples in water. The artist obtained the Furosemide from a loved one who struggled with a heart condition, adding another layer to the work's pulsating patterns. In Ogunquit, Weiner used Doxycycline remaining after treating his son for a tick bite during a vacation in Maine. The salmon-pink pills register against a ground of deep turquoise and green, resting atop the graphite underdrawing and extending the work's graphic possibilities. In these works, Weiner's drawings operate on two levels: as acts of artistic self-expression and as portraits of himself and his loved ones, traced through habits, recreations, injuries, illnesses, and care. His dual approach is rooted in the history of abstraction, from Color Field painting's formal expressions of emotion to Terry Winters' schematic spatial fields. Within this lineage, the daily act of art-making converges with the routines of living, where care accrues through small, repeated gestures. Weiner's meditative fields of color hold these iterative acts of care—at once Sisyphean and sacred. Against the backdrop of our increasingly chemically mediated relationships with our bodies, he employs slow, materially driven processes of sketching, soaking, and chance to reestablish a connection to his interior states.</image:caption>
